Photo: MARTIN DE RUYTER Big fun day at Appleby Fair Mostly fine skies are expected to greet those heading to the first of the summer's fairs on Saturday. The gates to the Appleby School Country Fair open at 11am promising three hours of family entertainment, competitions, cute animals, delicious food, plants and produce and loads of fun for the kids. House and garden items, sports equipment, toys, books, subscriptions, vouchers, wine, art, travel and a two-night holiday package for two for a trip to Wellington to attend the World of Wear- able Art Awards are among the prizes up for grabs. Fairground attractions will include pony rides, woodchoppers, hoop shooting with two members of the Giants basketball team and a Big Dig for kids. Appleby School's band, choir and jump jam teams will be complemented on the entertainment stage by a soul band and the Taiko drummers. The school's annual fundraiser last year attrac- ted thousands of people and fairgoers are advised to get in early to avoid disappointment. Traffic wardens will be on-hand to guide drivers to pad- dock parking.
