9 THE TASMAN LEADER, AUGUST 29, 2013 ARTS Waimea choir has Bryce's back By HELEN MURDOCH On song: New Zealand singer- songwriter Bryce Wastney rehearses with the Waimea College choir in preparation for next month's Nelson concert with Paul Ubana Jones. Nelson singer-songwriter Bryce Wastney is helping take the young voices of Waimea College's choir to the world. The student choir will back Bryce and Paul Ubana Jones in the Nelson performance of the national Songbook and Six-String Tour at the old St John's Church next month. Bryce, who recently signed with major US label Musik and Film, said a live DVD of the Nelson show would be filmed for release and download through the label's international contacts. The Nelson musician said the idea of having a backing choir came when he saw the church venue. It became a reality after he spoke with friend Trudy Wilson, the college's choral director, who started rehearsals for the show with the student choir two weeks ago. He was blown away'' by the students' ability and energy when he worked with them last week. The kids know their parts. This will really give me goosebumps on the night. We had a couple of run-throughs and it was really cool. They are all very excited, and a little bit nervous. It's awesome and has always been one of my dreams to perform with a full backing choir -- you do not often get the opportunity.'' The choir will sing four songs during the performance which will be filmed for the live DVD of the six- stop national tour to be distributed through Bryce's new label. Tickets for the September 14 show are on sale at Everyman. Bryce will be running a guitar workshop at the Nelson School of Music on September 12 in conjunction with Beggs Musicworks.
