Photo: JOHNNY BONNAR By JOHNNY BONNAR Tasman-based riders charged to the front of the pack during the annual Filco Farm and Sport Nelson Motocross Champs at Eighty-eight Valley during the weekend. The event is in its third year on the MotoXevents track, and 135 riders, some from as far south as Otago, battled in seven different classes. Event organiser Greg Stew- art said there were no serious injuries during the weekend. It's been really good. Good rider numbers and really good racing,'' he said. The junior 125cc class pro- vided some action-packed rac- ing between local riders Isaac Millson and Charlie Rowe after tipped favourite Dylan Walsh, of Rangiora, crashed in the first race, breaking his bike. Isaac took the overall prize after beating Charlie in the final race. They were joined on the podium by Otago's Maddison Latta who rode consistently to finish third. Golden Bay rider Hayze Shuttleworth showed some serious speed to beat Kayden Bourke and current national champion Grasson Veitch, who made the trek up from Dunedin, for the 11 to 12 years 85cc class overall. Hayze did not finish in worse than second place all weekend to easily claim the victory. In the 8 to 10 years 85cc class rising star Luca Donald- son was undefeated during the weekend ahead of Korban Paget and Matt Robinson. Luca's twin brother Nico finished fifth overall despite being on a smaller 65cc machine. Luca was also awarded the Josh Coppins trophy for scor- ing the most points in the jun- ior classes during the week- end. Nathan Clare and Hayden Wilkinson did everything they could to hold off the assault of Amberley's McGoldrick broth- ers, Isaiah and Micah in the Senior Pro class but were pipped at the post by the for- mer junior champions. Micah stood on the top step of the podium with Isaiah sec- ond and Nathan, who was tied for second but was relegated to third on count-back, round- ing out the top three. Hayden finished the week- end in sixth position after having to withdraw from the last race with a broken front wheel. He was edged out by Ran- giora's Cody Murphy and cross-country ace Ethan Bruce. In the 13 to 16 years 85cc class Clayton Roeske, No 5 in New Zealand, trailed Jack Dalton by just four points with Sam Lamborn third.
