Cyclocross hits town Acrazy cross between road cycling, mountainbiking and cross-country running proved popular with 27 riders lining up in the first cyclocross race held in the Nelson-Tasman region at Rabbit Island last Sunday. Cyclocross enthusiast Brian Grant organ- ised the race which was the first in a six-race Village Cycles series. Riders will also be com- peting in the Marlborough cyclocross series held on alternate weeks from the Nelson races. I've been meaning to run a cyclocross race in Nelson for ages but I've always been away racing in the US in the winter,'' Brian said. This is the first winter I've spent in Nelson in the last seven years so I finally got a chance to set up a series.'' Brian said cyclocross was a winter sport popular in Europe where there was a World Cup series. Cyclocross races typically featured a multi-lap cross-country course that included barriers and steep climbs requiring the rider to quickly dismount and carry their bike to navigate the obstacles. Everyone was really happy with the course and they can't wait to have the next one,'' Brian said. Although the purists rode cyclocross bikes on Sunday, Brian said he also encouraged mountainbikers to enter the series. Races were for all abilities. Jim Black won the race with mountainbiker Henry Jaine second and Jackson Carver third. Jim blitzed the field. He did the Marlbor- ough cyclocross series last year so he's pretty experienced.'' Race two of the Village Cycles series will be at Branford Park on July 14 with race three at Saxton Field on July 28. The final three races will be at Brightwater on August 11, Rabbit Island on August 25 and Motueka on September 8.
