Department of Conservation staff have been re-routing sections of the track that were washed out by slips and flooding that hit the area during the rain- storm on April 21. The Hackett was now passable to walkers and mountainbikers, although DOC Motueka area manager Martin Rodd said the track still needed more work. We had a team of two staff up there and they got stuck in and cut tracks around all the slips, Martin said. It s open to walkers but the mountainbikers will have a few bike-a-hikes in sec- tions so there s still some more work needed. Martin said he hoped DOC and the Nelson Mountainbike Club could work together to restore the Hackett to an intermediate level ride alth- ough he didn t want the track to become a raceway for riders . He said the mountainbike club was planning a new track from the Hackett Hut to the Lee Valley via the lower slopes of Mount Starveall and the restoration of the Hackett Track could fit into that plan. DOC staff had also repaired tracks to the Browning Hut and Whispering Falls, although the bridge to Whisper- ing Falls had not been replaced. Martin said DOC was undecided about replacing the bridge which he estimated would cost about $70,000. The track to Whispering Falls is okay but the bridge is still out which means it s a tramp with a river crossing rather than a day walk, he said. However, Martin said the new bridge at the Hackett Hut had withstood the flood despite water flowing over the bot- tom handrail . The swing bridge about one kilometre from the Hack- ett Picnic Area had also escaped the flood unscathed. The new bridge by the hut is a little bent but it s alright. We were lucky that nothing big came down in the flood and hit the bridge.
